Verstappen faces Monza curse as Leclerc endures pole misery - Italian GP stats

Max Verstappen took victory at the Italian Grand Prix to move closer to a second F1 title.

The Red Bull driver rose from seventh on the grid to defeat Charles Leclerc, who had taken pole for Ferrari in front of the passionate Tifosi.

At the end of a weekend filled with drama, let's take a look at the best stats and facts.

Seventh heaven

This was the first race to be won from seventh on the grid since the 2013 Australian GP, when Kimi Raikkonen took victory for Lotus.

Verstappen became the sixth different winner in the last seven Monza races.

Verstappen to face Monza curse

The previous three Italian Grand Prix winners [Charles Leclerc, Pierre Gasly and Daniel Ricciardo] all retired in the same event a year later.

Dutch delight

The race saw two Dutchmen scoring points for the first time in the championship’s history.

Verstappen beats championship year

Verstappen registered his eleventh win of the season, bettering his tally of ten from last year.

The Dutchman extended his career-best winning streak to five races.

Prior to this season, Verstappen had won only when starting from the first four slots on the grid. This year he’s won from seven different starting positions, the most by a driver in a season.

Verstappen accumulating records

The reigning champion has also finished on the podium at 30 of the 31 circuits he’s raced at. The only one he’s missed out on is Mugello.

With 1892.5 points after the Monza weekend, Verstappen now moves into fourth on the all-time points scorers list in F1 - though the list is skewed by the modern points system.

Perez outside the top five

Sergio Perez finished lower than fifth for the first time since the 2021 Russian GP.

Red Bull break duck

Red Bull’s victory was its first podium finish at Monza in the hybrid era.

Leclerc pole misery

Leclerc failed to concert pole into a race victory for the 13th time in his career. The Ferrari driver has taken just four wins from 17 pole positions.

The Monégasque has taken back-to-back podiums for the first time since the opening three rounds of the season.

Russell high five

George Russell has continued his streak of top-five finishes whenever he’s completed a race in 2022.

Rare Hamilton double-loss

Starting 19th on the grid, Lewis Hamilton made his way up to fifth - his best result at Monza since 2019.

Hamilton is now mathematically out of contention for the 2022 drivers’ title, marking the first time the seven-time champion has gone two consecutive seasons in the hybrid era without a championship victory.

Startling stat for Silver Arrows

Mercedes has claimed 13 podiums in 2022, the most by a team in one season without winning a Grand Prix.

Mercedes-powered cars have featured on every Monza podium in the hybrid era.

De Vries' incredible debut

Nyck de Vries became the 78th driver to score on their championship debut. The most recent driver to do so was Zhou Guanyu in Bahrain this year.

The last driver to do so in a Williams car was Nico Rosberg in 2006.

Alonso equals Raikkonen

Alpine's Fernando Alonso made his 349th race start in F1, equalling Kimi Raikkonen’s record tally.

The Enstone and Viry-based team left Italy empty-handed for the second time this year having failed to score at the Emilia Romagna GP at Imola.
