Magnussen reveals hammer-and-nails F1 retirement suggestion

Kevin Magnussen has revealed his back-to-basics considerations for life after his time in F1 eventually comes to an end.

The Dane returned to the sport this season as a last-minute replacement for Russian driver Nikita Mazepin, but his year out provided him with time to consider what life would look like without racing.

Asked of his projects outside the 'fishbowl' of F1, speaking to GPFans, Magnussen said: "I'm involved in different businesses and stuff. I have other interests but I think I'm quite a simple person really.

“When I'm not here [in F1], I'll be doing work like any other [person]. One of the things I enjoy the most is going to work with my friends, the carpenters or plumbers, and I seriously enjoy that simple stuff.

“My cousin is a carpenter and I'll go and join him at work and just hang out in whatever building they're doing. That stuff just makes me switch off."

Magnussen aiming to make a difference

F1 is all-consuming, with drivers thrust from pillar to post and seemingly afforded little time to breathe across a grand prix weekend.

Questioned whether a career as a tradesman could follow once his time in F1 is over, Magnussen added, "Maybe, who knows.

“Once I'm done with this, or even before I'm done, I'll start something more serious, like building stuff with my friends, because I can't think of many better things than hanging out with your mates and doing something with them.

“Certainly, in the future, I'd like to do something that also makes a difference for other people.

"When you benefit from one job, you get in a position where you can help other people and make a small difference, at least a meaningful difference, and that's something that I'm looking forward to."
