Charles Leclerc starts from pole position for the 16th time in his F1 career following a strategy masterclass from Ferrari in qualifying for the French Grand Prix.

Knowing Carlos Sainz would be starting at the back of the grid following a complete power unit change for his F1-75 after it caught fire during the race in Austria, Ferrari called on the Spanish driver to provide Leclerc with a tow at the Paul Ricard Circuit.

Sainz executed the plan perfectly to give Leclerc his latest pole at a venue where the driver at the front of the grid has won the last three races.

It was enough to keep Red Bull's Max Verstappen at bay as the duo again line up on the front row, with the Dutchman's team-mate Sergio Perez starting third.

As for Mercedes, hopes it would challenge at this track failed to materialise due to an inherent lack of pace that has left the team mystified and Lewis Hamilton and George Russell lining up fourth and sixth respectively.

Lando Norris separates the duo in a heavily upgraded McLaren, while behind him there are moves aplenty as Sainz and Kevin Magnussen drop to the back row, with the Dane's Haas also taking on a new PU.
