McLaren unlikely to make Formula E move

McLaren appear unlikely to join the host of big-name manufacturers moving into Formula E. Amid suggestions that Ferrari could pitch up into the all-electric series if they go through with their threat to quit Formula 1, McLaren say it would go against their traditions.

Audi, Jaguar and Renault are already major players in Formula E, with Nissan and BMW set to join next year.

Only Ferrari have entered more grands prix than McLaren, who have won eight constructors' championships, 12 drivers' titles and 182 races.

Ferrari's growing frustrations over Liberty Media's proposed changes to engine regulations and budget caps have led CEO Sergio Marchionne to say the Scuderia could confirm their exit by the end of this year.

Formula E has been mooted as a potential destination for the Prancing Horse, but McLaren don't look likely to follow.

"To be quite frank, whatever thoughts I've got will be quite uneducated," McLaren director of global sales Jolyon Nash told Bloomberg.

"I'm a traditionalist. I love to hear the sound of an engine going around a track. Formula E doesn't provide that.

"We wouldn't want to produce a car just to demonstrate technology — that is just not us."
