Ferrari has confirmed Charles Leclerc's power unit that expired at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last weekend has been damaged "beyond repair".

Leclerc was leading the race in Baku before smoke started to bellow from the back of his F1-75, leaving him left to rue yet more lost points in his championship fight with Red Bull duo Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

The Monégasque had lost the win in Monaco due to a Ferrari tactical error and also retired from a commanding lead in Spain, again through power unit troubles.

But ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend, the Scuderia carried out analysis to see whether the power unit could be saved.

Ahead of first practice at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, a Ferrari statement read: "The investigation confirmed Charles' Baku PU is beyond repair.

"One possible cause of the failure is that it occurred as a consequence of the PU problem in Spain.

"We are now working on countermeasures to strengthen the package and the situation is under control."

On whether the team would take a 10-place grid penalty, Leclerc explained: "Obviously, we are not in the best situation possible.

"There are still ongoing discussions. For now, no decisions have been taken but it is not the best situation to be in."
