Ricciardo Magnussen and Alonso penalised after frantic Miami GP ending

Daniel Ricciardo has been handed a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage at the Miami Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver was batting with Haas' Kevin Magnussen in the latter stages of the inaugural event at the Miami International Autodrome when defending his position into the turn 11 hairpin.

Ricciardo remained ahead but only after running wide on the exit, with the FIA race stewards deeming him guilty of gaining an unfair advantage.

The investigation report read: "The stewards reviewed the video evidence and determined that although car 3 [Ricciardo] was in front of car 20 [Magnussen] going into turn 12, it was only able to retain that position by leaving the track and returning to it alongside car 20 then used its speed to pull ahead."

Ricciardo's finishing position remains unaffected after ending the race nine seconds ahead of Nicholas Latifi's Williams in 13th.

Magnussen also penalised

Magnussen has also been handed a five-second penalty for causing a collision with Lance Stroll.

At the same corner, the Dane was on the inside of the Aston Martin driver but made contact, with Stroll disadvantaged and forced wide.

The report explained: "The stewards reviewed the video evidence and determined car 18 [Stroll] was ahead going into turn 11 and car 20 made contact forcing car 18 off the track.

"The driver of car 20 was wholly to blame for the collision."

Magnussen had failed to finish the race but will have two penalty points added to his superlicence.

Alonso picks up penalty double

Fernando Alonso had a scrappy race for Alpine, picking up an initial five-second penalty for colliding with Pierre Gasly.

That was an incident that led to the contact between the AlphaTauri and McLaren's Lando Norris which triggered the only safety car period of the race.

But Alonso has also been given an extra five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

The second penalty means the Spaniard again misses out on points after finishing eighth on the road, with Alex Albon promoted to ninth and Stroll to 10th.
