Williams exploding brake triggers qualifying red flag

Qualifying for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was red-flagged after a brake exploded on Alex Albon's Williams.

The FW44 could be seen with its right-rear tyre ablaze running through Acque Minerali towards the Variante Alta, with parts being shed and spat out across the track.

As the flames continued, Albon's brake thenspectacularly gave way in an explosion to trigger the stoppage as burning debris covered the track.

The incident was a near-identical issue to the one experienced by Williams team-mate Nicholas Latifi during pre-season testing in Bahrain, with the same brake exploding although at the time the cause was pinned on the wheel cake tin.

Albon will start the 100km sprint from last on the grid after failing to set a time before the issue, two weeks on from coming from the back of the grid to 10th in the Australian Grand Prix to earn the team its first point this year.
