Hamilton calls for South Africa to be next addition to F1 calendar

Lewis Hamilton has called on F1's powers that be to make South Africa the next addition to the calendar.

The sport was recently buoyed by the news it will be racing in Las Vegas from next year, an announcement that was met with universal approval from all the drivers as they spoke ahead of this weekend's Australian Grand Prix.

Seven-time F1 champion Hamilton was amongst those to express his enthusiasm but as the sport breaks new ground, he wants to see a return to a country that has waited almost 30 years for F1 to make a comeback.

"It's amazing the relationship we have now [with the United States, three races, that's going to be awesome," said the Mercedes driver.

"It will be good for the business, with Vegas an awesome addition. I've not seen the track layout so I don't really know how that will be but just being there, the spectacle, I welcome it.

"But the one I really want to see is South Africa. That's the next one I want to hear announced."

Asked as to why, Hamilton replied: "Well, we're pretty much on every other continent so why not.

"Ultimately, my ancestors are from there so it's important for me personally, and it's important for the sport to go there."
