Hamilton OUT in Q1 at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton will start the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 16th after being making his first Q1 exit on pure pace for the first time since 2009.

Hamilton has struggled with his Mercedes W13 since the start of the Jeddah weekend and this came to a head in qualifying as the seven-time champion qualified fifth slowest.

His Mercedes team-mate finished Q1 fourth behind only the two Ferrari drivers and Max Verstappen, but Hamilton had no answer.

It is the first time on pure pace that Hamilton has failed to escape Q1 since the 2009 British Grand Prix when racing with McLaren, and his first Q1 exit of any kind since the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix.

On F1's first visit to Saudi Arabia late last year, Hamilton scored pole position and continued on to victory.
