McLaren back Horner calls for "common sense" budget cap review

McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl says the team will use "common sense" when discussing potential changes to F1's budget cap.

The Woking-based outfit has been firmly for the cost cap that was introduced to F1 last season, with this year's budget set at $140million.

When sprint events were confirmed and teams attempted to push the cap to accommodate potential damages, McLaren was steadfast in the belief there should be no change to the agreed parameters.

Ahead of the new season, however, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has called for an urgent review of the cap as inflation hits extreme levels as well as the side effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with the sanctions on the former meaning a rise in energy prices.

Asked if McLaren would back such talks given the current financial climate, Seidl said: "It is always important to apply common sense.

"The situations that have come up in the last weeks and months with inflation and so on, I know the additional crisis that is going on, I think it is important to have a discussion about it and see what makes sense.

"We are absolutely up for that discussion and we will hold the discussions with the other teams, together with the FIA as well because I think we have the same challenge being in the cap and now having these additional and unexpected expenses.

"So open for the discussion, important also, open for solutions or potential adjustments as long as everything is happening within reason."
