Ferrari reveal "bouncing" focus ahead of developments

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto is certain the Scuderia will unlock more pace by fixing its "bouncing" issues than by chasing new developments ahead of the F1 season opener.

The second pre-season test is underway in Bahrain with all 10 teams eager to find a solution to the porpoising issues suffered last month in Barcelona.

Porpoising is a behaviour inherent with ground-effect cars and can be solved by raising the ride height, but as this affects efficiency and pace, teams are seeking alternative fixes.

Asked how many upgrades Ferrari had brought with it to Bahrain, Binotto explained: “Not much. We have certainly not done as much as Mercedes.

"Mainly the car is the same as in Barcelona so we can work through the bouncing issue, so bringing some modifications for that purpose and then trying to optimise the package we’ve got at the moment.

“These cars are so different to the past that I think first we need to learn them and then extract the maximum potential and I think we are in that process. We are in the process of still learning.

"There is much to come but from the current package that is where we are focusing before I think we will see some developments.”

Ferrari continued its strong start to pre-season testing with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc second and third quickest after the first day on Thursday.
