FIA approves advanced safety feature ahead of new season

The FIA has approved advanced debris fences for use at all Grade 1 circuits ahead of the beginning of the new F1 season.

The approval of the upgraded structures means a roll-out is available for all circuits that are eligible to host top-class motorsport around the world.

With driver, marshal and spectator safety of paramount importance, safety fencing at circuits have constantly evolved and the latest system, developed by Swiss company Geobrugg, improves safety for all involved whilst offering better views for those at an event.

Debris fences are required to be fixed in place by steel posts and the previous requirements allowed for one post every four metres.

The new homologation allows for the posts to now be separated by six metres, increasing the effectiveness of the debris containment system by reducing the probability of a car striking one of the posts.

The new posts do not require as many concrete foundation points, whilst fewer transport containers will be needed to ship the fences, improving the sustainability benefits of the product.

Jochen Braunwarth, Geobrugg’s Director of Motorsport Solutions said: “We aimed for no less than a revolution in debris fences.

"A massive impact on sustainability whilst trying to improve safety and installation friendliness of the system was our goal.

"I believe we have achieved this and more. Circuits looking for a more sustainable solution and improved spectator experience shouldn’t look any further.”
