FIA play down Andretti entry talks

The FIA has responded to Mario Andretti's confirmation that son Michael has submitted a bid to enter F1 from 2024.

The 1978 world champion surprised the sport by tweeting Andretti Jr's bid, four months after a deal to take over Alfa Romeo's operation fell through at the "11th hour" over "control issues".

Speaking to the Indianapolis Star, Andretti Sr suggested Andretti Global would be ready for action as soon as a bid was accepted and even went as far to give details as to where the team would be based.

However, a spokesperson for the governing body said: "The FIA is not currently in a position to consider or comment on any expressions of interest or applications received from potential new entrant teams in respect to the FIA Formula 1 world championship."

A new team based in the United States would capitalise on the growing exposure gained with the help of Netflix series 'Drive to survive', which saw a record crowd at the Circuit of the Americas last season.

With COTA securing a new deal through to 2026 and Miami joining the calendar this year, stock would surely rise with Andretti joining.
