F1 relief new cars 'no longer have their arses waggling in the air'

Ross Brawn believes F1's new era will deliver racing cars as they should look rather than in recent years when they had what he has humorously described as 'their arses waggling in the air'.

Brawn has been at the heart of the introduction of new aerodynamic regulations that has reintroduced a form of ground-effect car from this season.

The result is machinery much lower to the ground to decrease the level of wake from the back of a car and allow rivals behind to follow more closely to aid overtaking.

In recent seasons the rake on certain cars had become particularly prominent, with the Red Bull that carried Max Verstappen to the drivers' title last year significantly high at the rear.

Assessing the development of the cars he has seen so far, F1 managing director motorsports Brawn said: "The cars are looking great. That's really rewarding.

"We produced our own model in Formula 1 but it was fairly plain vanilla, if you like, in interpreting the regulations, so it's great to see the variation.

"When the regulations were issued there was a complaint about the cars looking the same. We didn't believe that, and that's proven to be the case.

"I have to be honest, I really need to see the cars in the flesh, a true impression, so I'll be going to Barcelona for the first test [from February 23] and I'll probably get a much better idea there and in Bahrain [second test from March 10] as to how these cars are going to look.

"But that variation is reassuring, and just the look of the cars, they look great and the fans will be engaged with them."

Reflecting on the ground-effect, Brawn added: "The fact the cars are going to race in a lower stance...they've looked a bit silly haven't they, these low-rake cars, some perched on their nose and waggling their arses in the air.

"They've never really looked like a racing car should look, so these ones will look a lot better out on the track as well."
