Rosberg's RXR defeats Hamilton's X44 for maiden Extreme E title

Nico Rosberg's RXR held off Lewis Hamilton's X44 team to clinch the inaugural Extreme E championship.

X44's Sebastian Loeb and Cristina Gutiérrez took the team's first win of the season at the Jurassic X-Prix but were unable to overcome the deficit to RXR's pairing of Molly Taylor and Johan Kristoffersson, who had taken three wins across the season.

The two teams finished level on 155 points for the maiden campaign after RXR finished fourth in the final race, with Rosberg's team coming out on top courtesy of countback with more race wins.

The series mixes the world of rallying with racing as teams of two drivers - one male and one female - battle it out in environments affected by global warming to raise awareness of the challenges posed by the phenomenon.

Jenson Button's JBXE outfit finished the finale second with Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky and Timmy Hansen stalking Loeb and Gutiérrez, with Andretti United rounding out the podium.

Rosberg, Hamilton and Button will be joined by McLaren for the second year of the series in 2022.
