Hamilton composure praised after 'soul ripped out' in Abu Dhabi showdown

Former F1 world champion Mario Andretti has praised the composure of Lewis Hamilton after "his soul was ripped out" in Abu Dhabi.

Hamilton missed out on a record-breaking eighth world title in the most dramatic of ways after a controversial safety car restart at the Yas Marina Circuit allowed for a last-lap shootout between the Briton and Max Verstappen.

Following the race, Hamilton completed his post-race interview with Jenson Button but failed to attend any other media engagements as Mercedes put up a wall of silence.

However, after appearing gracious in defeat in his brief interview, 1978 champion Andretti complimented Hamilton's behaviour.

"The Hamilton masterclass on how to be the best in every way," said Andretti.

"A champion who wins most days and shows the world how to behave & stay composed when situations aren't kind to you.

"LH brings his A-game even when his soul is ripped out. Strength. Control of spirit. Role model."

Tweeting as the chequered flag fell in Abu Dhabi, Andretti showed his enthusiasm for the dramatic fashion in which the championship concluded.

He added: "What a showdown! I love champions, records and stories that make my heart beat 300 beats a minute! Congratulations World Champion Max Verstappen. And to Lewis Hamilton, for an epic season and a story that surely continues...💪💪💪."
