Sergio Perez insisted he gave his "full heart" in the Mexico City Grand Prix but was left wanting more despite scoring a historic home podium by finishing third.

For the first time in his F1 career, Perez has registered three consecutive podiums to help Red Bull close to within a point of Mercedes in the constructors' championship.

More importantly for Perez, the Mexican became the first driver from his homeland to not only lead his home race but also stand on the podium.

During the closing stages, it appeared Perez had the opportunity to finish runner-up as he charged up to the rear of Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes although he was unable to find an opening.

"It's an unbelievable day," said a jubilant Perez as the packed baseball stadium chanted his name as he was being interviewed.

"Obviously, I wanted more. Today, I wanted to get the one-two for the team.

"It was pretty close but I didn't have a single chance to get through. Still, I gave my full heart for these people."

Paying tribute to the fans that roared him lap after lap, Perez added: "I could actually hear them when I was going through here.

"It was pretty enjoyable. It was full of support."
