Williams' "unique" situation allowing Russell to enjoy final races

George Russell has explained how Williams' "unique" situation is allowing him to "enjoy every single opportunity" that arrives in his final quarter of a season with the F1 team.

The British driver makes the move to Mercedes to partner Lewis Hamilton in 2022 after spending three years honing his craft with a Williams team that, with Russell, has made great strides in closing the gap to the midfield since 2019.

With the cushion from Williams to Alfa Romeo sitting at 16 points with just five races remaining, the chance of the Swiss-Italian outfit overhauling the deficit is little to none, yet the difference between the Grove-based team to Aston Martin is 39 points.

With eighth almost certainly cemented, Russell believes the team has been afforded the opportunity to enjoy its last races with him as a driver.

“I think we’re just going out and enjoying every single opportunity to be honest," said Russell.

"I think we’re in a really nice position that we’ve got a small buffer to Alfa Romeo behind and [we are] just enjoying these moments.

"I think we’ve done an amazing job this season and we can go out there and try some new things on the car and go in some different directions with the set-up and see how that reacts."

With the races now coming thick and fast, with five over the next six weekends that begin on Sunday with the Mexico City Grand Prix, Russell added: “It’s quite a unique opportunity we find ourselves in.

"I wouldn’t say no man's land, but we’re so far from seventh and I think we’re in a strong position in P8 at the moment, so just going out there, making the most of every opportunity and just enjoying it with the whole team.

“There’s still plenty of time left before we say our goodbyes in Abu Dhabi.”
