Hulkenberg rules out IndyCar switch despite impressive McLaren debut

Aston Martin reserve driver Nico Hulkenberg has opted against pursuing a career in IndyCar despite impressing during his test for Arrow McLaren SP last month.

Hulkenberg ran for over 100 laps at Barber Motorsports Park with McLaren searching for a third driver to add to the lineup that already includes Pato O'Ward and Felix Rosenqvist.

Arrow McLaren SP team president Taylor Kiel insisted the German "didn't put a wheel wrong all day" during his maiden run out, with Zak Brown suggesting that "Nico is right towards the top of the list" with regard to a prospective third seat.

That has now been ruled out with the former Williams, Force India, Sauber and Renault driver providing an update on Twitter.

"Quick update regarding Indycar: It was exciting to test an Indycar two weeks ago and I am grateful to Arrow McLaren SP for this opportunity," wrote Hulkenberg.

"However for personal reasons I decided not to go ahead with it. Keep you posted on my future plans."

It is as yet unclear where Hulkenberg will take his racing career, with any chance of an F1 comeback now looking unrealistic given just one seat remains open for 2022 at Alfa Romeo.
