Williams "free" to continue making "aggressive" strategy calls

Williams head of vehicle performance Dave Robson has revealed team principal Jost Capito is "proactive" in reminding the team to take aggressive strategy calls.

In recent qualifying sessions in mixed conditions, Williams has been assertive in its tyre strategy, with George Russell twice qualifying inside the top three as a result.

With the team in a fight for eighth in the constructors' standings with Alfa Romeo, Robson maintains offence has so far been the best defence, a tactic endorsed by Capito.

“I think the car is good enough at the moment that we can at least see some reward for taking those kinds of decisions which makes a big difference," said Robson.

"It means you don’t make the decision and then look back with unjustified regret afterwards because you actually see some reward for it.

“Equally, Jost is very supportive of those decisions. That’s not to say that the previous management wasn’t.

"But Jost is very proactive in reminding us that we are free to make those kinds of decisions and that there won’t be any direct comeback if it turns out to be wrong.

“He undoubtedly has a part to play in setting that scene and allowing us to do a good job.”
