Gasly slates AlphaTauri for "bad job" and 'huge opportunity missed'

Pierre Gasly has slated AlphaTauri for ignoring his calls to pit for fresh tyres in Q2 after crashing out of qualifying.

Gasly will start the Russian Grand Prix from 12th after the team's midfield rivals benefited from using a second set of intermediate tyres to beat the Frenchman's efforts.

“I don’t have the words," said Gasly on Sky Sports F1. "I don’t know.

"We were very competitive over Q1 and Q2 and then we stayed out with a set of used tyres which were dead and for three laps I was asking to box because the track was drying.

“We didn’t do it and in the end, we were nowhere with this used tyre. I just feel like we missed a huge opportunity.

“As we saw, it was a crazy Q3 and we know in these conditions you need to be there until the end to do it and we did a bad job there.”

Earlier in Q2, Gasly had complained of blocking from other drivers but after his exit, he conceded this was not to blame for his result.

“Yeah, I got blocked a little bit but that wasn’t even the point," he added. "Honestly, we should have just been out there on new tyres like most of the guys.

“We didn’t do that and we need to review why we decided to do that. But now it doesn’t matter. We need to think about tomorrow and recover because we need points.”
