Kubica says "never say never" to Alfa Romeo 2022 seat

Robert Kubica has stated he does not view himself as being in the race for a 2022 seat at Alfa Romeo but has ruled "never say never".

Kubica deputised for Alfa Romeo at the last two race weekends in the Netherlands and Italy after Kimi Raikkonen tested positive for Covid-19.

The Polish driver has been the reserve driver for the team since 2020 after making his F1 comeback with Williams the year before.

Asked if he was in contention for a 2022 race seat, Kubica said: “Well, that is a difficult question. Definitely not from my side.

"I have learned from my life that everything can happen from day to day, positives and negatives, so never say never.

“But realistically, I think there are some other drivers who are probably higher on the list. I don’t know, you will have to ask Fred."

F2 drivers Guanyu Zhou and Oscar Piastri have been linked with the seat currently occupied by Antonio Giovinazzi for next year as has Haas driver Mick Schumacher.

Kubica scored just one point in his 2019 season with Williams but ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, he conceded his season lapping at the back was not racing.

“I think realistically the last time I actually raced in Formula 1 was 2010 so it is really a long time ago," Kubica explained.

“Of course, we were not racing at the front [in Zandvoort] but still managed to have some nice battles, managed to defend well for more than a few laps against Seb."
