Gasly to start from pit lane after complete PU change

Pierre Gasly will start the Italian Grand Prix from the pit lane after AlphaTauri elected to make a complete power unit change following his sprint crash at Monza.

Gasly had finished sixth in qualifying on Friday in a continuation of his stellar form this season.

The Frenchman collided with Daniel Ricciardo at turn one of the 18-lap sprint, however, before his front wing folded underneath his left-front tyre at the Curva Grande, sending the AlphaTauri into the barriers and therefore qualifying 19th.

The team has changed every component of the power unit but as the energy store is of a different specification to the component fitted ahead of parc fermé this weekend, Gasly will be forced to start from the pit lane.

Last year's Italian Grand Prix winner would have taken meaningless grid penalties as the energy store and control electronics fitted are the third of two allocated for the season and the rest of the components are the fourth of three allowed.

The team has also changed the gearbox on the AlphaTauri, meaning any pain will not be carried through to the next round in Russia.
