McLaren has confirmed Lando Norris has been taken to hospital for a "precautionary x-ray" following his heavy crash during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Norris had topped both of the first two phases of qualifying at Spa Francorchamps and was the first driver to take to the track in Q3.

With rain falling heavily, Norris lost the rear of his McLaren through Eau Rouge and slid into the tyre barrier at Raidillon.

The crash brought out the red flags and although Norris walked away from the wreckage, McLaren has confirmed the Briton has now been taken to hospital.

A brief update from McLaren read: "Following his accident during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, Lando was checked at the trackside medical centre and then sent to a local hospital for a precautionary x-ray of his elbow.

"A further update will be issued in due course."

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the session was concluded, team principal Andreas Seidl added: "The most important thing is he is basically okay.

"He was in somehow good spirits again when he left the medical centre on the way to the hospital. They do some precautionary checks now as they always do after such impacts.

"His elbow was hurting a bit so they will check that in more detail but hopefully he is fine and back tonight here at the track."

Asked if Norris will be fit to race on Sunday, Seidl said: "It is too early to say at the moment. We need to wait for these precautionary checks but hopefully, he will be fine."
