Alfa Romeo team principal Fred Vasseur is targeting more "chaotic" opportunities to retake eighth in the constructors' championship.

Despite starting the season with promise, a lack of development and bad luck prevented points from being scored.

Whilst the team have since accumulated three points, Williams' double-points score in Hungary has seen Alfa Romeo slip to ninth and seven points adrift of the team that has propped the table up the past two seasons.

"When you are in this situation, it's true if you have a look at the last three or four seasons, you always have one, two, three chaotic races," said Vasseur in an interview with GPFans Global.

"If nothing happens, and the potential is to be P12, P13 then you will never score points, then you will reach the end of the season with two points.

"Now that we are starting to have chaotic events at the top you are starting to have more race incidents, more risks being taken, and with the engines, they are taking on more mileage, and for sure that will lead to opportunities."

With the changing nature of F1, Vasseur has refused to target specific milestones but wants to ensure his team stays at the top of the lower-midfield in order to capitalise should such an opportunity present itself.

"Most important is to be in the front of our group, to be able to be in front of one AlphaTauri, one McLaren or one Alpine, and that is the day when we will have an opportunity," he added.

"I don't want to fix a target. What I want is to be the leader of this group, which is the best way to [finish] P8 because if you start P13 then you won't score points.

"One day we will have such an occasion and on this day I want to be in front."
