Mazepin "conservative" in 2022 Haas expectations

Nikita Mazepin has warned against setting "expectations too high" for 2022 despite Haas focussing all its energy on the next generation car this season.

Haas has brought only minor upgrades to its VF21 this year but the car has remained unchanged since the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in April.

As made clear by team principal Guenther Steiner, this decision was taken as the opportunities for progression in 2022 far outweigh those of the current season.

Mazepin, however, remains conservative in his expectations.

"I try to be more conservative with my thoughts, with my ambitions because you need to put maximum effort and then make sure that your expectations are not too high," he explained to GPFans Global.

"Sometimes, if you set your expectations too high, you try too hard and then you end up with worse results."

Compared to Haas' so far score-less season, Mazepin stated he expects to be fighting for points in 2022.

"I think it's never going to be easy because the other nine teams in the grid, they're not sleeping as well," he added.

"Everybody wants to get those points and get those constructor positions. It's really difficult, but I'm sure we'll be better than this year. That's the aim.

"I'm sure we're going to be fighting for points at some point."
