Lando Norris has quipped "it's about time" Sergio Perez jumped him in the F1 drivers' championship following the Mexican's victory in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
McLaren driver Norris has performed superbly this season, scoring podiums at Imola and Monaco that resulted in him lining up third in the standings going into the recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
But Perez's first win for Red Bull following his move over the summer propelled him above Norris by three points, with only team-mate Max Verstappen and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton now ahead.
“It’s about time," joked Norris when asked about the fact Perez had overtaken him in the standings. "But that doesn’t matter. It’s about time he overtook me so congrats to him, his first win with Red Bull.
“They’re a lot quicker so it’s expected. I’m not disappointed I lost P3 in the championship but from my side, I was happy with the weekend.
“A few mistakes from my side on Saturday and a couple in the race but apart from that a good job.”
Norris enjoys F1 sprint race preview
At the British Grand Prix, F1 will complete its first trial of a new sprint race qualifying format.
The two-lap dash to the line in Baku, however, gave fans an unexpected preview of what to expect, with Norris proclaiming it "fun".
"It feels quite different to a normal start because you have a lot more grip with the soft tyres and very low fuel so you can be quite a bit more attacking.," added Norris.
"It’s a bit more enjoyable in that way and we gained two positions with Hamilton going straight on and getting past Tsunoda."
