Alonso eyes Baku 'opportunities' to end pointless streak

Fernando Alonso expects another challenging weekend in Azerbaijan but warned 'anything can happen' on the Baku streets.

Alonso has endured a difficult start to life back in the F1 paddock, scoring points at just two races from five whilst team-mate Estaban Ocon has been a regular inside the top 10.

In the last two races, Ocon has finished ninth on each occasion with Alonso ending up only 17th and 13th.

Commenting on his past form in Azerbaijan, the Spaniard said: "I’ve qualified outside the top ten in my past two races here but gone on to finish inside the points.

"It shows anything can happen in what is usually a very unpredictable weekend. The circuit has a mix of areas where the priority is top speed, with the middle sector more dependent on downforce and mechanical grip."

He added: "It’s a challenging weekend for both car and driver and finding a good balance with the setup will be very important."

Although Alonso was able to secure a top 10 starting position at the Spanish Grand Prix, he was only able to qualify 13th in Monaco, the same position he finished despite the retirements of frontrunners Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas.

Keen to progress up the order this weekend, he said: "After two races in a row – where it was quite tough to overtake – it’s nice to have a race where it’s more possible."
