Pierre Gasly conceded he was 'pissed off' at dropping points for AlphaTauri after lining up out of position for the start of the Spanish Grand Prix.

The Frenchman was penalised five seconds for positioning his car ahead of his grid box, meaning he dropped positions whilst serving his punishment during his first pit-stop.

Knowing how crucial track position is at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya, Gasly took full responsibility for the error and bemoaned the lost points.

"I am really upset with myself for the penalty at the start because it was a really silly penalty," said Gasly.

"I just misjudged the position. I always try to gain everything I can, gain every millimetre but this time I just went too far and paid a pretty big price.

"Five seconds, knowing we finished only a tenth [0.190s] behind [Esteban] Ocon for P9, I obviously lost a point and it pisses me off."

Gasly was able to regroup after a second stop, taking advantage of Fernando Alonso holding up multiple drivers at the tail-end of the midfield to regain a top-10 position.

On his battling end to the race, Gasly added: "I think the last stint was really good, really aggressive and we were overtaking so this is a positive.

"But on the other hand, we don't have the performance we would like so we need to work to find more."
