Hamilton questions "what's next" in quest for change

Lewis Hamilton has questioned "what's next" as he continues to lead the fight against inequality in sport and society.

Last season, Hamilton spearheaded the drive for Formula 1 and the wider motorsport community to change its attitude and philosophy given the industry is white-male dominated.

The seven-time F1 champion was also heavily involved in promoting the 'Black Lives Matter' message, with the Mercedes driver taking a knee before the start of races.

F1's response was to deliver the #WeRaceAsOne initiative that made a commitment to addressing all areas of inequality throughout motorsport and not just specifically racial inequality.

But ahead of the forthcoming campaign, Hamilton is now wondering what additional steps will be taken.

"Last year some of us took a knee in support of equality which I am proud of," said the seven-time champion via social media.

"My question is, what’s next? The inequities within our sport and within the world persist. Change is still needed. We must keep pushing to hold ourselves and others accountable.

"We have to keep striving for equality for all, in order to continue to see true and lasting change in our world. As long as I have air in my lungs, I will continue to fight for change in everything I do.

"I will work to create pathways and opportunities for kids of colour, within sciences, engineering and creative disciplines. Let’s keep pushing. What are you committed to?"

In signing a new one-year contract with Mercedes, Hamilton agreed to join forces with the German manufacturer in a joint diversity foundation.

This is in addition to the Hamilton Commission which has been designed to address the barriers preventing minority groups from building a career in motorsport.
