McLaren budget cap strategy has "forks in the road"

McLaren's plan to implement and cope with the new budget cap in Formula 1 has "different forks in the road" dependent on how the new season pans out.

This season will be the first run within a cost cap, set at $145million, dropping to $140m for next year and $135m for 2023 to 2025.

Whilst CEO Zak Brown has confirmed the team is ready for the upcoming season, he has stated that subsequent campaigns will be dependent on championship performance.

“We are ready for ’21, and we have a plan for ’22 and ’23," said Brown.

"But that plan has a couple of different forks in the road, if you like, based on what we learn and as to what is the most efficient way to get the maximum performance out of our monies where we spend.

"We have those plans in place but we don’t need to execute those plans yet because we want to leave ourselves room for understanding what will be the most efficient and performance-orientated way to run at the reduced cap."

The budget cap is a sum of money that excludes the cost of a driver's salary and the three additional highest earners at the team.
