Sir Frank Williams has been discharged from hospital and "is now on the mend at home" the family has confirmed.

The 78-year-old was admitted to hospital on December 15 and was reported at the time to be in a stable condition, but with no details as to his condition.

After nine nights in hospital, Williams will at least be able to enjoy Christmas at home with his family.

Via a statement on social media issued through Williams Racing, it read: "We're delighted to say that Sir Frank has been discharged from hospital and is now on the mend at home.

"The Williams family would like to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time, and to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."

Williams stepped down from his role as team principal in early September following the sale of his illustrious marque to American investment company Dorilton Capital.

In 2016, Williams contracted pneumonia after which his presence at races sharply declined, although he had relinquished much of his responsibilities to daughter Claire a few years previously after she was appointed deputy team principal.
