Steiner – No “special magic” to Haas success in Bahrain

Team boss Guenther Steiner is looking for Haas to recover their previous form in Bahrain this weekend but admitted there is “no special magic” to past successes at the track.

In the team's second-ever race, Romain Grosjean finished the Bahrain Grand Prix fifth, a result Kevin Magnussen equalled two years later. Those finishes have been bettered only once, when the duo came home fourth and fifth in Austria in 2018.

Both drivers made the top-10 shootout in qualifying at the track last year and Steiner said: “The track has always suited our car. There’s no special magic, we always seem to run quite strong there. I would love to see it happen again this year.”

Grosjean scored back-to-back podiums in his first two visits to Bahrain, when driving for Renault, and both he and Magnussen will be looking to end the season on a high with neither retained by the team for 2021.

This has been a tough season for the team, however, and they have only finished in the points twice, in the Hungarian and Eifel Grands Prix, with four 12th places their next highest finishes.

Magnussen believes wet conditions at the last race in Turkey gave them a good opportunity to score and admitted: ”We missed out [but] it wasn’t because of lack of pace, we actually had the pace to be fighting for points because of those conditions.”
