Furious Magnussen demands FIA implement new yellow-flag rule change

Kevin Magnussen has called on the FIA to implement a new rule change surrounding double-waved yellow flags following a treacherous qualifying session at Istanbul Park.

Magnussen was left fuming when he was knocked out of the first session in qualifying after slowing under yellows on his flying lap, claiming other drivers failed to lift off and went unpunished after spins involving Williams driver Nicholas Latifi and AlphaTauri's Daniil Kvyat.

The FIA did later punish Williams' George Russell and McLaren's Lando Norris, while Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Perez, as well as Magnussen, were all exonerated after telemetry evidence proved they lifted through the incidents.

The Dane, though, was far from happy at the time as he said: "If this is the norm, if this is normal then I can't justify backing off. I'd rather get through and get a penalty later, so it's dangerous."

The penalty for Norris, in tandem with a three-place grid drop for team-mate Carlos Sainz for impeding, means Magnussen will start from 14th after originally qualifying 16th.

Magnussen feels the double-yellow flag rules should be changed moving forward.

"I was in P7 and I got knocked out at the chequered [flag]," added Magnussen. "I respected the rules.

"We must abort the lap, not just simply lift off if there’s a double yellow flag – which there was. I’m pretty annoyed with that. Everyone else pushed, improved their laps, but I’m knocked out of Q1.”
