Mercedes has confirmed a second Formula 1 team member has tested positive for Covid-19.

In the wake of announcing a positive test on Thursday, the team decided to retest everyone currently at the Nürburgring for this weekend's Eifel Grand Prix.

The results led to a second positive test, while another team member is inconclusive and is being retested.

In line with FIA and Formula 1 protocols, four additional team members, all of whom tested negative, will no longer be available to take part in the weekend.

It has resulted in Mercedes flying out six replacements from the UK who will fill the roles of those who have been forced to step aside.

A Mercedes spokesperson has clarified that the team "has worked in close collaboration with the FIA and F1 throughout this process and will continue to do so".

Mercedes has requested "understanding that owing to restrictions around data protection and medical confidentiality, we will not be able to provide further details on the identity of the team members affected".

It is understood, however, that none of the team members concerned are relatively well known in the F1 paddock.
