Staying in F1 meaningless if it's not "the right project" - Perez

Sergio Perez has confirmed he has no desire to leave Formula 1 behind but that he will only remain in the sport if the project is right.

After being dropped by Racing Point to make way for Sebastian Vettel ahead of the team being rebranded to Aston Martin in 2021, Perez is arguably the highest-profile driver currently on the market.

With speculation suggesting Alfa Romeo is close to announcing a pairing of Kimi Raikkonen and F2 championship leader Mick Schumacher, Haas appears the most likely destination for the Mexican.

While conceding his desire to remain in F1 is "very strong", he added: "I really love what I am doing.

"After you have had a good weekend it is the best feeling, and after a bad weekend, it is the worst.

"I want to continue but I have to make sure I find the right project, not just to carry on. I need the motivation to keep going, to be training and to be giving 100 per cent each lap and that's what I feel.

"I need to get a project of motivation. If not, I won't be continuing."

As to whether any team had made a direct approach for his services, Perez confirmed there had been talks with "a couple of teams", but insisted he would be keeping the details of such conversations quiet.

"There has been contact with a couple of teams and talks, but that is something that I will keep between the teams and myself," confirmed Perez.

"I think everyone deserves their respect. They have current drivers, current discussions so it is something I will definitely keep to myself."
