Williams acting team principal Simon Roberts has confirmed the bottom-of-the-table team will spend all the regulations allow to climb the order in 2021.

Formula 1 will introduce a budget cap for the first time in its history next year, initially $145million before dropping to $140m in 2022, and then $135m from 2023-2025.

While there may be some teams that struggle to hit the $145m 'target', Roberts has indicated Williams will push to hit the ceiling in order to extract as much performance such an amount of money will buy.

"Our budget is based on getting towards the cost cap," said Roberts.

"This year it’s too late. We’ve only four months to go and we’re pretty much set on where we are headed but for next year we are looking at what we can do and we now have the finances behind us to do that."

Williams was sold to US investment company Dorilton Capital in August in a move that, when combined with the recent signing of a new Concorde Agreement, is hoped will transform the team's fortunes.

After finishing bottom of the constructors' standings the past two seasons, Williams appears set to prop up the order again this year as it has yet to score a point from 10 races.

It also faces another tough season in the same machinery again next year ahead of a focus on the 2022 regulation changes.

With this in mind, Roberts added: "It’s not a given we will spend to the limit. We will only spend money and invest where it makes sense."
