Romain Grosjean has declared himself to be "a bit jealous" of Pierre Gasly's Italian Grand Prix victory.

While the Haas driver himself has stood on the podium 10 times during his F1 career - all with Lotus - including two runner-up finishes in the 2012 Canadian and 2013 United States Grands Prix, Gasly became the first Frenchman to win in F1 since Olivier Panis in 1996.

After coming so close himself to breaking his country's winning drought, Grosjean has revealed to being slightly envious of AlphaTauri driver Gasly's achievement.

“I was genuinely very happy for Pierre," said the 34-year-old.

“Obviously also a bit jealous because I was close to the win three or four times and there weren’t any French wins for a long time. But genuinely very happy for Pierre, I think he deserves it and he did a mega job."

With Gasly hailed a hero in France after his maiden success, Grosjean is hoping the victory will spark more interest from his home country in F1.

“Obviously, yes, it’s going to be a big thing in France and it has been," added Grosjean.

"I’m hoping that the tv journalists and the fans, and so on, follow it more. But I think the big thing is to make Formula 1 a show in general and that we have more races like Monza.”
