Monza confirms Italian GP will be run without fans

Italian Grand Prix officials have confirmed this year's Formula 1 race at Monza will be run without spectators.

It had been hoped the race on September 4-6 would become the first this year to be staged with a limited number of fans in attendance.

But a statement on the circuit's official website has now declared that due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the race "will be held behind closed doors or without spectators". Fans who had purchased tickets will be able to get a full refund.

Last year Monza was the stage for incredible post-race scenes following Charles Leclerc's victory for Ferrari.

After the first three races of this coronavirus-hit season were run without spectators present - the double-header at Austria's Red Bull Ring and the most recent event at the Hungaroring on the outskirts of Budapest - the next five will also now run under the same circumstances.

It remains to be seen if the ninth race on the calendar, the Tuscan Grand Prix at Mugello on September 11-13 that hosts Ferrari's 1,000th race of its illustrious F1 history, will allow fans to be present.

The Russian Grand Prix at the end of September is currently selling tickets as it plans to have spectators in attendance.
