Penalty aside, "we would do the same thing again" - Steiner

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has said "we would do the same thing again" despite being penalised for a formation lap gamble in Hungary.

Haas qualified 16th and 18th at the Hungarian Grand Prix and appeared to have made an inspired decision to pit both Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen for slicks at the end of the formation lap.

As other pitted under race conditions, Haas briefly had both cars running inside the top four, but a post-race investigation rule the instruction to pit contravened regulations.

As a result, both drivers were given ten-second penalties. Even with this however, Magnussen was successful in scoring the teams first point of the season and, as a result Steiner mad clear: “For sure we would do the same thing again.

"The ten-second penalty was a little bit ambiguous. Unfortunately, we cannot appeal it because it’s a time penalty – you’re not allowed to appeal those ones. It was never done before, and it looks like if it’s never been done before – and there’s no clear regulation, you get a penalty.

"We need to move on from this, but for sure it spiced the race up for everybody. I don’t think we should stop doing these things in racing, otherwise accountants can race in Formula 1."

Ahead of the British Grand Prix, Steiner warned Silverstone would bring "no joy" for the Haas team, but when confirming no upgrades were planned for the season, he added: "It will not be an easy year but we’re here to stay.”
