McLaren to reunite with iconic motorsport brand

McLaren is set to reunite with one of motorsport's most iconic brands - Gulf.

Images surfaced on social media on Thursday of a McLaren F1 show car at a Gulf service station in Aldershot with the company's renowned logo on the engine cover.

McLaren also released a blurred teaser image on its Twitter account - that was later deleted - of the car alongside the words "Coming soon..." along with the 'finger to the lips' emoji.

Lando Norris and Zak Brown were on hand to help with what is understood to be a promotional shoot ahead of an expected announcement in the coming days.

For now, McLaren is remaining coy on the subject, but as this tweet shows, the Gulf logo is clearly visible towards the rear of the car.

McLaren has moved quickly to secure Gulf as a partner after its deal with Petrobras drew to a close at the end of last year.

The history between McLaren and Gulf stretches back to the 1960s when the company was then a sponsor, both in F1 and the Can-Am series.

Gulf gained iconic status for its sponsorship of sports cars in Le Mans, gaining a starring role in the hit Steve McQueen movie from 1971.

In 1975, entering Le Mans as the Gulf Research Racing Co., it achieved overall victory with Derek Bell and Jacky Ickx at the wheel of a Mirage GR8-Ford Cosworth.
