Sergio Perez is in "no doubt" Aston Martin will be able to challenge Formula 1's 'big three' when the team makes its debut in 2021.

Although Racing Point will morph into Aston Martin from next season, Perez believes the steps currently being taken - including the budget cap - will ensure the team will prove a worth adversary to Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.

Speaking at Thursday's FIA drivers' press conference at the Red Bull Ring ahead of the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix, Perez said: "The team is in good shape, a good position for the future.

"Everyone saw what we managed to do in the past with such a limited budget. We were extremely successful. So I think now everything is ready in the team to welcome Aston Martin, and definitely to make the next step.

"It has to be a huge step to fight with the top three, with the big teams, but with the cost cap that brings everyone more together and hopefully, I have no doubt we will be able to challenge them."

Following its strong showing in pre-season testing, Force India is widely expected to be the 'best of the rest' this season, leaving Perez itching to discover what the RP 20 is capable of.

"We are about to find out how competitive it is. It felt good in Barcelona, it had good potential," said Perez.

"But it's been a while since then. I don't know how much other teams were able to improve. We've a lot to find out.

"I certainly feel extremely positive, extremely motivated to start the season on a high and hope for the best.

"I hope we can be fighting the top three, challenging the top three teams. That would be something good for us."
