Ferrari willing "to break a sub-bubble" if needs must during an F1 weekend

Ferrari sporting Laurent Mekies has confirmed the Scuderia will break one of its own sub-bubbles if there is an operational need during a Formula 1 race weekend.

Under new FIA regulations to deal with Covid-19, each of the 10 teams will be isolated from one another and effectively operating within their own 'bubble' to avoid coming into contact with anyone from another marque.

Independently, Ferrari is to go a step further and is to utilise 'sub-bubbles', for example, the race crew working on Sebastian Vettel's car will be kept isolated as much as is possible from those on Charles Leclerc's car.

Mekies has revealed, though, that should an engine change be required, or other mechanical need when time is of the essence, then the sub-bubbles will be broken to address the issue.

"It's not a regulation so you are not forced into doing the bubbles," said Mekies.

"You are forced into operating your team as a bubble, and the fact we have a sub-bubble is our responsibility. And we do it to be as resilient as possible in case we have a positive case.

"So depending on how we design our bubble, we will limit the operations and the contact between the people.

"In this case, if we need to do something like that, if we need to break a sub-bubble to go after an operational need, we can perfectly do it.

Mekies is aware of the potential consequences, however, adding: "What it means is that as a team we will be a bit less resilient in case one of these persons is unfortunately positive. It's a decision that we can take in autonomy."
