Imola boss Selvatico Estense has called on Formula 1 bosses to set up a historic Italian triple-header and restore his circuit to the calendar this season.

On Wednesday, GPFans sources confirmed plans are in place for a race at Mugello on September 11-13, to follow a week after the Italian Grand Prix.

Formula Imola President Estense now has his sights set on creating a trio of races in the country, plans which could create the first quadruple-header in the history of the sport, with the Belgian Grand Prix kickstarting such a series.

"Imola has F1 in its DNA and on this track the history of F1 has taken place, it must not be forgotten, and we must be rightly proud of it," said Estense.

"Looking ahead, and with an eye to the local economy in this serious moment of crisis, our goal is to bring back the top series to Imola's circuit from this year.

"The most logical and most suitable solution for F1 fans from all over the world would be to use circuits with great media impact, as Imola certainly is. Perhaps together with Monza and Mugello, for a legendary national triple."

Speaking on Wednesday, the same day AlphaTauri completed a filming day with this year's AT01, while Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly also drove laps in the team's 2018 car, Estense confirmed work to bring F1 back to his track began early in the global lockdown.

Estense added: "We started since April of this year working with great dedication and passion on this hypothesis, together with the local and regional institutions and the FOWC [Formula 1 world championship], and we hope that the national sports authority will also support our candidature for this season."

It is now 14 years since Imola last held what was then entitled the San Marino Grand Prix.
