Lewis Hamilton is widely expected to sign a contract extension with Mercedes, but boss Toto Wolff is in no hurry to finalise the new deal.

During pre-season testing, rumours linked Hamilton with a move to Ferrari, with the speculation spiking when Sebastian Vettel announced he would be departing the Scuderia at the end of the 2020 season.

Ferrari, however, quickly announced the signing of Carlos Sainz, leaving Hamilton now almost certain to put pen to paper on a contract extension with Mercedes.

Wolff, though, is at ease with the situation, explaining the delayed start to the season has also deferred the beginning of any talks.

“We didn’t see each other over lockdown,” said Wolff. “We were in different parts of the world. We were in very regular contact, but we didn’t work on any agreement.

“Between us, there is a lot of trust. We have been together for a long time and never in these years together have we had to take the contract out and actually read what was written in them because it comes so naturally.

“Therefore, once racing resumes, we’re going to spend some time together, dig the contract out of the cupboard, look at the timings and the numbers and the rights, and then hopefully have something pretty soon.”
