Russell 'jealous of mates at the top'

George Russell has expressed his 'jealousy' at seeing his friends in top Formula 1 race seats, but believes that he will eventually join them at the front of the grid.

A Mercedes junior driver, Russell has a clear pathway into one of the most exciting seats on the grid, but the thought of what could happen in the future does little to help when seeing his peers enjoying top drives already.

“We’re all youngsters, we all want to have that successful career and races and victories, right here in the moment," Russell told Sky Sports F1 on Instagram Live.

"Seeing my mates up there in potential championship-winning cars, it’s something I’m a little bit jealous of obviously because I want to be up there trying to fight as well."

A year ahead of his rivals in terms of experience, Charles Leclerc has now established himself to be the future of Ferrari, taking the coveted role of 'number one' driver.

Racing their rookie campaigns in 2019, Russell was stuck in uncompetitive machinery, battling with teammate Robert Kubica not to finish last, while Lando Norris was a consistent points scorer at McLaren and Alex Albon gained a mid-season promotion from Toro Rosso to the race winning Red Bull outfit.

“I know as long as I keep on performing and I keep doing my job to the best of my ability that opportunity will come whether it’s next year, two years, five years, 10 years. It should come," continued Russell.

“Even Nico Rosberg, I don’t know how old he was when he won his first race and how many years he was in F1, but if I keep performing and doing the job, we’ll all get our chance.

“That’s all I can do at the moment."
