Steiner: "We're in a mothball situation"

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner claims Formula 1's current situation feels like it has been placed in mothballs.

With no racing until the Canadian Grand Prix on June 14 at the earliest following the cancellation or postponement of the opening eight races due to the coronavirus pandemic, F1 - like the rest of the world - finds itself in a bizarre limbo.

After a decision was made to bring forward August's traditional summer break to a three-week spring shutdown, Haas opted to close its doors earlier this month.

As Steiner concedes, it is now a question of sitting and waiting for when racing will finally be up and running again.

"Nobody knows. It's a strange thing," Steiner told GPFans.

"We are all hopeful, thinking we can get started this summer. We're all realistic that it will not be any earlier than that now.

"But nobody really knows, and nobody is brave enough any more to make a commitment, which is the right thing to do.

"We're all simply hoping the world becomes a better place. Obviously, we need to think about what's going on, more than ourselves.

"We just need to keep on hoping that it gets better, and be ready for any situation and that as soon as it does get better we are there."

As to the morale within the Haas camp, Steiner added: "I wouldn't say it's high, but it's not low.

"We're conscious of the situation. Everybody at the moment is happy to have a job and to be getting paid, even if they're not working. That's the biggest thing.

"At the moment we are in a mothball situation and we just have to wait it out, lay low, and hope for the best. It's the only thing you can do."
