Red Bull: We are closer to making Verstappen world champion

Red Bull chief Helmut Marko reckons the team are “a step closer” to achieving their target of making Max Verstappen the youngest champion in the history of Formula 1.

They currently have four titles to their name as a constructor team, all via Sebastian Vettel who won four in a row between 2010 and 2013.

In recent years they have dropped to become the third-best team on the grid, finishing in that position in each of the last three seasons.

Marko believes they are in a better position now than in those campaigns to make a legitimate assault on the championship.

“The car does what we expected and what we hoped for,” he insisted.

“We start the season with a very positive feeling. We have come a step closer to our goal of making Max Verstappen the youngest world champion.”

The Austrian thinks that they could even start winning as early as the Australian Grand Prix, where he expects Red Bull to compete against Mercedes to claim the flag.

“Testing is deceiving and the teams hide what they really are doing,” he added.

“But we are certainly much better prepared than in recent years. I think we can fight with Mercedes for victory in Australia.”

The opening race of the 2020 season is scheduled to take place in Melbourne on Sunday, 15th March.
