Russell: Despite progress, Williams are still the slowest team

George Russell is pleased with the progress of Williams across the winter but still feels that they have the slowest car on the Formula 1 grid.

Williams appear to have closed the gap to the midfield, but Russell remains in no doubt that they are starting from the weakest position of any team on the grid.

"No doubt we're in a better position," said Russell. "I think realistically, we are still the slowest car.

"We're not going to get carried away with ourselves, but we've definitely reduced the gap. That's all we could have hoped for over over the winter."

Talking about the final day of testing in Barcelona, Russell said that the team have managed to complete all of the simulations that they had planned despite the various early reliability issues suffered.

"It was a productive day and we got in almost all the laps we wanted to," added Russell. "We had a good morning doing qualifying simulations and managed a race simulation in the afternoon.

"We got plenty of laps on the board and it was good preparation ahead of Australia.

"No doubt we are in a better position than last year, but we’re not going to get carried away. I am optimistic that we can go to Melbourne and be in the fight, but until we get there we won’t know for sure."
