Mercedes have released a short video explaining the design process behind their 2020 Formula 1 entry, the W11.
Technical Director James Allison explains that the team were close to sticking with the same W10 from 2019, simply developing the car further, but the risk of falling behind rivals Red Bull and Ferrari by doing this was too great.
“We were feeling the breath of our opponents on our shoulders, we know their hunger and if we don’t do something impressive with this car, they’ll eat us up and leave us behind," said Allison.
He continued by explaining that Mercedes decided to make the W11 more 'aggressive' than they had originally planned to extract the maximum potential for the current regulations.
Allison added, “We decided to make a car that was aggressive despite the fact that there is no change in the regulations, and we wanted to challenge ourselves to take every part of the car and make it better."
The W11 will return to the track on Wednesday 26 February when the final three day pre-season test begins.
